Debbi and Matthew Scarborough

Founders of Cumberland Academy of Georgia

Debbi and Matthew Scarborough have a personal interest in Cumberland Academy of Georgia because of their son Steven Scarborough. Steven is a flourishing, smart young man who was born with Asperger’s Syndrome. Steven has attended a public school through his 5th grade year. Debbi and Matthew felt it was time to focus on his academics and his social challenges and send him to a school with a more nurturing environment.

“Our son Steven has amazing learning potential but requires a more one-on-one learning environment than most students because of his Asperger’s Syndrome. Cumberland Academy of Georgia is designed for students like Steven who love to learn and interact with other children but need more than a traditional school can accommodate.”
After much work and research Debbi and Matthew started Cumberland Academy of Georgia.

Cumberland Academy of Georgia is more than a school. We are a “safe, supportive community,” utilizing constant, friendly, mature interaction between staff and students, with the goal of maximizing each student’s potential. Every child needs the opportunity to be prepared for a college career, but not every child wants to attend college/university. At Cumberland, we prepare and challenge each student to become the most effective functioning adult they want to and should become. This means that we guide them into career choices that will allow each of our students to become academically and vocationally adept.Being a successful individual means: I am in the process of achieving my personal life goals, whereby I am able to communicate with other people effectively, can support myself and others, feel worthy of positive personal esteem, with social, academic and vocational skills which enhance the God-given abilities with which each human being is endowed. Cumberland’s task/dedication is to help all of our students discover their talents, discipline themselves to maximize these talents, and enjoy being who they are meant to be during their sojourn here on Earth. Our staff is composed of self-giving professionals who have chosen this path for their lives so that each of our students can prosper. To each of our students, whatever your goal (and may it be lofty and challenging), we welcome you–not to a school, but to a family that will take a personal interest in your welfare and give you the support and tools for a life of peace, joy and contentment. At Cumberland Academy of Georgia, the motto is that “Every Child Can Succeed.” With the expertise and commitment of Cumberland Academy of Georgia, your child will be a success, too.
