Asperger’s Syndrome
We, here at Cumberland Academy of Georgia, are able to service children with high functioning autism (and asperger’s, etc.) through many components of the school. The smaller classroom settings allow teachers to be able to identify each child’s learning needs. All teachers are certified in special education and use skills to re-direct, engage and challenge each student daily. We also have a counseling office with two counselors, weekly social skills groups for every student, and additional support [staff] for tutoring. We offer a curriculum that follows the Georgia standards, we will also ability teach to those students who need to be more academically challenged, as well as for those who need some more individualized attention.
The counselors use a variety of techniques based on the individual needs of each child in the school. One of the counselors is a trained play and family therapist utilizing skills and concepts from play therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, Positive Psychology as well as Individual Psychology. Additionally, the counselors utilize blended techniques from energy psychology. Both counselors have many years experience working with children and families.
In addition to the supportive staff, inviting challenging academics and counseling office, the school also offers many opportunities for children to relax, re-group, explore and master real-life experiences with a library, computer lab, game room, art room, and regular off campus activities such as cooking classes, restaurant outings, rafting trips, etc. We are fully accredited from SACS/CASI as well as th Georgia Accrediting Commission, and teach grades 4th – 12th. We offer a strong college prep program and a vocation/work program for our graduating seniors.
